Human Rights Day was established by a United Nations resolution to be commemorated each year on December 10th with the objective to make people everywhere conscious of the importance of human rights and freedoms

On this 62nd Human Rights Day, we look at the rights of older people, and acknowledge the work that is being done to secure their human rights. http://www.ngocoa-ny.org/toast-a-landmark-resolution/

On November 19, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution establishing a working group to address protections for the rights of older people. This is the first meaningful step toward creating a Human Rights Instrument (a legally binding agreement) on the rights of older people. Many advocates have suggested that the time has come for greater protection in the form of a new Human Rights Instrument. With a new UN Convention, governments would have an explicit legal framework with guidance and support that would enable them to ensure that older people’s rights are realized in our increasingly aging societies.

Please take a moment to see the pictures and comments from around the world in support of the adopted resolution establishing a working group to address protections for the rights of older people.
